Comments on Locality Data

The paper indicated that the collection done in October 2015 in Sierra Madre was in "Disimongal, Madela." There is no such place as Madela in the province of Quirino. However, there is a municipality called Maddela, and in this municipality there is a barangay called Disimongal. It is possible that the name of the place is just misspelled in the paper. The paper also indicated that another collection was done in May 2015 in the province of Quirino. However, the barangay was not specified. This may mean collection could be in the same barangay (Disimongal), but it is not known.

The same case can be observed on the locality for the holotype where only up to the municipality level was indicated (Province of Aurora, Municiplity of Dingalan). No GPS coordinates were indicated in the paper for this particular species. The seemingly inadequate knowledge of Philippine geography probably means that the researcher may not have visited the sites where collection was done. If so, it would have been better if the researcher actually went to the Sierra Madre mountain range to ensure appropriate acquisition of GPS coordinates and proper identification of the locality up to the barangay (and possibly purok) level.

The paper also indicated collector as "local collector". It would have been more appropriate to indicate the name of the collector for credibility and reliability. Collection of wildlife for research purposes is approved through the issuance of Wildlife Gratuitous Permit (WGP) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Office. This is under Republic Act 9147, also known as the "Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act". But since the month and year of collection was indicated in the paper, the name of such local collector is probably in the permit that the DENR keeps in file, and can be retrieved by a simple "Freedom of Information" request.

Also, for research involving collection of actual specimens, Section 4.1 in the Wildlife Gratuitous Permit indicates that the DENR shall be acknowledged. Such acknowledgment is not indicated in the paper.
