Bakukang, et al. Notes 03: 18 weevil species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) from PH declared by researchers as new to science in 2016

New species of beetles are constantly being discovered in the Philippines[1][3]. Currently, studies on Philippine weevils are scarce. Checklists of species in the country are hard to find. As of writing, only a few entomologists are studying the weevils of the Philippines. Recent studies on this group of beetles are focused on documentation of species and their distribution.

New species of weevils are being discovered every year since 2015. And each year, more than one new species are being described. In fact, in the year 2016 eighteen species were described and named (Figure 1)[2, 4, 5, 6]. One species belong to the genus Macrocyrtus, and 17 species belong to the genus Pachyrhynchus. Below is a list of the 18 species described in 2016.

  • May be a synonym only of Pachyrhynchus phaleratus  Waterhouse, 1841 (see Reference 9).
  • P. elenae is not officially recognized in the Administrative Order 2019-09 of the DENR PH, but P. phaleratus is listed (page 17 of  DAO 2019-09. See Reference 10).
