Comments on Locality Data

In this paper [1], P. tetramaculatus distribution was declared as "Luzon Island, Nueva Vizcaya Province" (page 143, reference 1). Under type material for this species, the paper indicated the specific municipality where the specimens were collected, which is the municipality of Quezon.

GPS coordinates of sampling sites can be very helpful in verifying the locality data. Verifiable, accurate locality data is very important in environmental assessment studies. The paper [1], however, did not indicate the specific GPS coordinates of the sampling site for this particular species. The same can also be said for the other species declared new in this paper. Images of sampling sites can also be helpful in the verification of locality data. However, these are also not presented in the paper.

Wildlife collections performed in the Philippines for research purposes are issued a Wildlife Gratuitous Permit (WGP). This is mandated in the Republic Act 9147 [2]. In the WGP, the specific location of the collection, as well as the names of the individuals who performed the collection are indicated. This document can be used as provenance to ascertain the accuracy of the locality data. A copy of the WGP can be acquired through a Freedom of Information request to the issuing DENR regional office which, in this case, should be in Region II - Cagayan Valley.

Aside from P. tetratmaculatus, three other new species and two new subspecies were also presented. The commentary on other related insights is discussed in the post for P. kirklayroni.
